The European Jazz Contest is a competition managed by Saint Louis College of Music of Rome and dedicated to young jazz players (instrumental groups or groups with vocalist) coming from all over Europe, proposing original projects. Over the years hundreds of groups decided to take part in the competition, and to discover the sounds and the back-grounds of their peers, coming from other nations.
The goal of the initiative is the promotion of the original music of young musicians, using jazz as a context of research and comparison for the new avantguardes. All kinds of non-main-stream Jazz based interpretations from Free Jazz to experimental and electronics are gladly welcomed! The European Jazz Contest wishes to create a stage for new, fresh and yet undiscovered music!
International collaborations with Music Institutes and Conservatories have been renewed and further widened, to grant a large participation of international groups and to root the Contest in a fertile cultural exchange ground. In 2013 the Jazz Contest inaugurated, next to the international collaborations with music Institutes and European Conservatoires, a direct partnership with the Conservatorium Maastricht, which hosted the final rounds of the 2013 competition in the beautiful City theatre, Theater aan het Vrijthof. For the 2017 Edition this partnership will be renewed along with the Civici corsi di Jazz of Milan, and two new partners will participate: Hogeschool Gent, Hochschule für Musik und theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig and Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.
The competition will be articulated in 2 different phases: pre-selection of bands on the basis of a demo, containing 4 original tunes and 2 standards, and the finals, held in Rome in November. During the finals the 4 finalist bands will perform for a total of 30 minutes each.
As an award, the winner will get their EP recorded live during the final concert, which will be published through the Saint Louis Jazz Collection label, which will be distributed over the world’s most popular digital streaming platforms. The winner will also have the chance to perform in 6 live shows, organized by Saint Louis, in Italy and in other European countries.
Participation is open to all kinds of jazz-style projects, without limits: from traditional to avant-garde and experimental, in any language or dialect.
Nevertheless the project must contain one or more of the following features:
1) Original compositions
2) Original traditional music arrangements from the band’s country of origin
The Evaluation Board, chaired by M° Stefano Mastruzzi, will be composed for the pre-selection by Saint Louis musicians, journalists and operators of the industry. For the finals, judges from other cities and European countries will participate, amongst which jury members of the Civici verse di jazz of Milan, Conservatorium Maastricht, Hogeschool Gent, Hochschule für Musik und theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig and Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.
